SEREAD is an educational programme being implemented in primary and secondary schools in a number of Pacific Island countries. The aim of the programme is to raise understanding of ocean and climate science using examples that are relevant to educators and schoolchildren in the region.

In 2008 a marine data and observations training workshop was held to help increase awareness and understanding of the data and products being generated by the various coastal and open ocean observing programmes operating in the Pacific Islands region. The workshop generated a number of useful resources.

Corals bleach and die when they experience thermal stress. NOAA's Coral Reef Watch (CRW) program monitors temperature conditions around the world using satellites to identify risk of coral bleaching. CRW has generated a number of educational resources designed to improve understanding of how the data are collected and processed into bleaching information and alerts.

The Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) and its partner, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) work together to promote training and capacity building leading towards a global observation scheme for the oceans. The POGO-SCOR Visiting Fellowship programme is open to scientists, technicians, graduate students (PhD) and Post Doctoral Fellows involved in oceanographic work at centres in developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
